Operation: kitchen spruce

After my post last week regarding the state of the inside of Brady Manor, I really got to thinking about real changes we could make around the house.  After several conversations with Chris, and a session of perusing many home improvement sites, I came up with a small, doable list of things I'd like to change about our house.  The {loosely made} plan at this point is to tackle the two rooms I have the most issue with: the kitchen and the bathroom.

There aren't too many things we can change about the kitchen because of our open floor plan.  It's a very small space and everything is kind of crammed wherever it will fit.  My biggest issues, aesthetically, are the cabinets and the counters.  Below is a design board I created to convey the feel I'd like to have after we're through.

Can we talk about that apron sink??  I die.  I haven't decided on a palette yet, as I'm not sure we'll even paint the walls.  But as far as the cabinets are concerned, I've decided I want to paint them white.  If you remember, they're currently hideous plain oak.  I've done some research and found that painting them shouldn't be too, too hard, just time consuming.  Something we could probably accomplish in a weekend, if we worked diligently.  At first I was leaning toward staining them darker, but I think the white will really open up the room and make it brighter.  I'd like to add a panel of beadboard at the end of the peninsula also.

As far as the counters are concerned, I have always loved, loved, loved butcher block.  We've found some for what I think is a reasonable price at Lumber Liquidators and I am hoping that this is something we can make happen.  With these two improvements, I think it's going to really change the look and feel of the kitchen.  I hope we can make it happen.  I am actually pretty excited to dive in!

Ask me again how I feel after I've sanded a zillion cabinet fronts...
